2018 Brain Bee at MSU Winners

High school students from as far as Traverse City, Grand Rapids, and Detroit traveled to MSU on Sunday, February 4, 2018 to spend the afternoon tackling neuroscience test questions at the seventh annual Brain Bee at MSU. The Brain Bee is a competition that tests students on their neuroscience knowledge with a multiple choice written exam and two oral Q&A rounds. Topics included intelligence, memory, emotions, sensations, movement, stress, neuronal signaling, sleep, and numerous neurological diseases.

The first place winner of the Brain Bee at MSU, Madhav Ramesh, a sophomore from Troy Athens High School, will travel to compete in the National Brain Bee March 15-18  in Baltimore, MD. He also received a copy of Neuroscience, a graduate neuroscience textbook, and a fellowship to MSU if he declares a Neuroscience major. At the National competition, Madhav will compete in oral and written tests, as well as patient diagnostic, neuroanatomy, and neurohistology sessions.

Hassan Siddiqui, a junior from Detroit Country Day, and Sarah Syed, a junior from International Academy Central, were the second and third place winners, respectively.

The MSU Neuroscience Program faculty and graduate students take great pride in their outreach efforts. In addition to the annual Brain Bee at MSU, the program hosts the annual Neuroscience Fair, which will take place on April 14, 2018, visits local schools during Brain Awareness Week, runs a 2 week summer camp as part of the MST@MSU Program, and volunteers for local science fairs, the Middle School Girl’s Math and Science Day, the MSU Science Festival, and the Prime Time Seniors Program.
